About this kilt
The Buchanan clan originated in the 12th century, with its name derived from the Gaelic "Buchanan," meaning "house of the canon." The clan's earliest ancestor, Anselan, was granted lands by King David I, establishing the family around Loch Lomond. The Buchanans became influential in Scottish politics and military affairs, particularly supporting Robert the Bruce during the Wars of Scottish Independence. By the 15th and 16th centuries, the clan held significant estates and positions of power. However, the clan's fortunes declined in the 17th century due to political unrest and rivalries, particularly with the Campbells. Many Buchanan supported the Jacobite cause in the 18th century, but the clan’s influence waned after the Battle of Culloden. Today, the Buchanan legacy is celebrated by descendants and Scottish heritage groups.
